Buyers arrive having already read most of what you planned to tell them. They are also about as wary of your rep as they are of the tool that produced their research. Gartner found 51% say misleading information is more likely to come from generative AI. 49% said the same of a sales rep. So credibility is now the deliverable, and it runs on one thing: a rep with a current, accurate read on the account. That is what Call to CRM captures after every meeting.
What did Gartner actually find?
Gartner surveyed 645 B2B buyers. Fieldwork ran August through September 2025, and the findings were presented in May 2026.
Buyers used an average of seven information sources on a recent purchase. 45% used generative AI, mostly to research vendors and products. 67% said they would prefer a sales rep free experience. 70% said they would prefer a completely digital, self service purchase.
Read only that far and the conclusion looks obvious. The seller matters less.
The next finding says otherwise. 69% of those same buyers prefer to validate AI generated insights with a sales rep. Gartner also reports reps remain the most important information source at four points. When the buyer is researching the problem or need. When they identify a preferred supplier. When they secure internal support. When they finalize the purchase.
Gartner's Robert Blaisdell put it plainly. Buyers still turn to sales reps to validate AI generated insights, and to support decisions at critical moments.

Does the 49% mean buyers think sales reps are dishonest?
No. The figure measures what a buyer expects, not how reps behave.
It says a buyer walks into the meeting guarded. He thinks a wrong answer is about as likely to come from the person across the table as from the tool he used last week. That posture was built over years of being oversold by a lot of companies. Most reps earned none of it.
But the posture is real, and it changed the job. The rep used to be where the information came from. Now the information is already on the buyer's desk. The rep is the one being asked which parts of it are true for this buyer, at this size, in this market. He gets about the same benefit of the doubt the tool got.
That is a harder job than the one it replaced.
What makes a rep credible to a buyer who already did the research?
A real read on the account. What is actually true about this buyer's situation. What changed since the last conversation. Which of the seven things they read applies here and which does not.
No battlecard produces that read. No deck produces it. It gets built one meeting at a time. It also decays fast, because the rep who has it is driving to his next appointment twenty minutes later.
For an inside team, some of that record builds itself. The call leaves a recording. The email leaves a thread.
For a field team it does not exist. A rep sat in a distributor's office for an hour. He learned the thing that decides the deal, and he drove home. By Friday the sharp version is gone. What reaches the CRM is a reconstruction.
How do you capture a rep's read without adding another tool?
Ask for it while it still exists, through something he already carries.
With Call to CRM the rep finishes a meeting and calls a number from the parking lot. June asks the team's own qualification and risk questions. They are the same ones a good manager asks on a ride along. The rep talks it through for three to five minutes. June confirms what she heard. Structured notes land in the CRM the company already runs.
No app, no login, no typing. June is never in the customer's meeting. She recognizes the rep by his registered number plus his PIN. She also remembers how he likes to work from one call to the next.
The value is the habit. The same questions get asked after every meeting, so the read gets built and stays current. The company knows what its people actually heard, instead of finding out at the loss review.
FAQ
Are sales reps becoming less important as buyers adopt AI?
Less important as a source of information. More important as a source of validation. Gartner found 67% of buyers would prefer a rep free experience, and 69% still prefer to validate AI insights with a rep.
Why are buyers skeptical of sales reps and AI at the same time?
Because both can be confidently wrong. Gartner found 51% more likely to expect misleading information from generative AI. 49% said the same of a sales rep. That is close to even.
How do reps get better at validating buyer research?
Make sure every rep carries a current read on his accounts. That comes from asking the same questions after every meeting. Capture the answers while they are fresh. More content does not fix it.
What is Call to CRM?
A guided debrief by phone. The rep calls June after a meeting. She asks the team's qualification and risk questions. The answers become structured fields in the CRM the company already uses. It is rep initiated every time, with no app and no login.
